The following information is primarily for persons with macular degeneration but it is a useful guideline for anyone with a vision loss. 1) Take a dietary supplement labeled as an AREDS 2 formula, CoQ-10 (100 to 200 mg. per day) and purified fish oil (omega-3, 1000 mg twice per day) if permitted by your physician. For the one I personally take see: MaxiVision 2) Follow all recommendations of your ophthalmologist or optometrist 3) Monitor your vision using the Amsler grid 4) Maintain a healthy diet that includes fruits (prunes, raisins, blueberries, strawberries, etc.) and vegetables (watercress, kale, spinach, broccoli, beets, etc). Please check with your doctor first. 5) Do not smoke and avoid second hand smoke 6) Keep your blood pressure controlled 7) Keep your blood sugar controlled 8) Wear sunglasses that shade your eyes from the front, top and sides, that are polarized and preferably blue-blocking, a hat with a brim is also helpful 9) If you are obese lose weight under the care of your primary care physician 10) Exercise as recommended by your primary care physician 11) Review information on the website at the National Eye Institutes. 12) Check each month for updated information on the MD Support website: www.mdSupport.org 13) If you have siblings, children or grand children you need to discuss this information with them and make it available.
